I finally went downtown with camera in tow and a willing participant to play with me :) How can you not love old buildings on a perfect almost spring evening???

look forward

I've discovered that the imminent change from mother of young kids to mother of school children has hit me harder than I was expecting. I guess I relied on the ages of my girls for lots of different things: from somehow excusing my lack of "a real job" to making me feel (and maybe appear) younger (to others).
So now E is in preschool and will be in Kindergarten in August. S is in the 2nd Grade. I found myself in the gym today for the 1st time in over a year, completely on my own: no responsibility for anyone's care for an entire 3 1/2 hours. Wow. Bittersweet. But no excuses for skipping the gym now!
I can see my return to my gym-rat days in my future! Hell, I can see alot of things returning to my life soon! This may be better than I imagine (and will distract me from the occasional sadness I will feel about the ending of that special time of life when I was the center of the universe for 2 little girls)... c

hooray for [almost] spring!

Where I live, it's bloody hot in the summer months (plus a few fall months!) and freezing in the winter. Having grown up minutes from the beach and perpetually 70 degrees, I can get quite depressed when my vitamin D runs low. BUT this is the time for happiness! Warm sunny days at the park at the end of our street :) Nuthin' better than watching my kids play (all three of them!)

Assignment 1: Direct Sunlight

Since I missed out on not one but TWO photography workshops that will be coming to CA the next few weeks, I did the next best thing and signed up for a website that just went live called PhotographyMentor.com The photographer that founded it is a pretty successful wedding photographer, even shooting some high profile celebrity weddings. The online school has video clips, a forum, galleries, and assignments. I'm hoping it will take me a bit further in my craft.
Our 1st assignment has us shooting a photo in direct sun. Easy peasy, you non-shooters are saying, right? Well, in fact, direct sun, with it's harsh shadows, flare, and squinty eye creating brightness, is one of the worst types of light you can work with; hence, the challenge.
Since the girls were at their grandparents, I chose a little still life for today. I'm sure I'll make another attempt with my fav subjects before the assignment deadline.

Pink and hearts... what could be more girly?
Thought I'd get S to share in the "fun" E and I have been having. And I was pleasantly surprised by her enthusiastic cooperation. Anything for candy, I suppose... ;)
